This document tries to explain how to configure printing on a machine running Ubuntu Linux 8.04 using our Laptop Network. If things arn't clear please let us know.
Recent versions of Ubuntu use CUPS for printing, but disable detection of network printer advertisements by default. By turning it on you should see all available printers.
Log into the machine as a user with Admin privelages and go to the System Administration Printing menu item. This will launch the Printer Configuration tool, which may prompt for your administration password. |

In the Printing Configuration tool, select Server Settings on the left and check the Show printers shared by other systems, and click on Apply.
Once this is enabled an item called Remote Printers should appear in the area on the left of the tool containing a list of detected printers. You should then be able to use any of these from applications. You should not need to alter any printer settings since it will pick up the available options, and features automatically from the print server.
If you want to check a printer you can select one from the list. This will change the information on the right of the tool to show the settings for the printer. This allows you to view the features (and optional settings) of the hardware. You can also set your default printer this way.
Remember that all of our printers default to using A4 paper and most which can print double-sided (duplex) will do so by default.
If you do not see any printers, or cannot view the properties etc remember that you need to first be authenticated to the network in order to print.
It will take several seconds for all the advertised printers to be detected and the tool may need to have the Refresh button pressed to display them.
This setup has been tested on Ubuntu 8.04. Configuration should be very similar for other fairly recent versions of Ubuntu. For details on how to configure printing on other versions of Ubuntu please refer to the documentation provided with the system or contact your local computer support staff.
